My son and I went out on this New England Mountain Bike Association (NEMBA) ride on Saturday, and in his words it was “Awesome!”
They had plenty of knowledgeable ride guides, inspected all the bikes, handed out a bunch of free snacks and drinks. Riders were also educated on proper trail use and etiquette and also which trails are ok for mountaing biking in the Fells.
The ride had some challenging parts and there was plenty of opportunity to practice the techniques being taught. Parents don’t have to ride along, but it’s probably a good idea to do so if you have younger kids. There were a couple of spills and it may be more comforting to have a parent handy in such a situation.
All in all it was a great ride. They are holding two more sessions this season:
Kids Rides! MA DCR’s “No Child Left Inside” with NEMBA Explorers:
Sponsored by the MA Dept. of Conservation and Recreation, GBNEMBA and NEMBA Explorers present the “No Child Left Inside” ride series at the Middlesex Fells.
In 2007, the MA DCR created a program to provide outside, supervised activity for children: “No Child Left Inside” to give children an opportunity to get some exercise and an introduction to one of the most unique outdoor spaces found anywhere. This year there will be 4 rides all on Saturdays..
What: DCR / NEMBA No Child Left Inside/NEMBA Explorers Ride
Where: Middlesex Fells – Meet at Flynn Rink
When: Saturdays – June 21st, July 12th, August 9th, and October 4th
When: meet @ 10:30am for preride meeting and ride starts @ 11:00am
Skill Level: Kids – ages 6-11 and 12-17 – there will be 2 groups.
Duration: about 1-1.5 hrs
Pace: all will be waited for
411: This ride is meant to introduce children to the fun, excitement and fitness benefits that come from riding bikes in the woods and to teach respect for the parks, trails, and other trail users.. The ride will be well staffed and every safety precaution will be observed. Parents are welcome on the ride, but not required. Riders must have a serviceable bike, properly fitting helmet, and water for the ride. Snacks will be provided! (If you cannot supply a bike or helmet for your child, please let Tim Post or Lynn Hildenbrand at the DCR know as soon as possible and we’ll see if we can arrange something.)
